Countryside vs City Life

Been revising allll day since first thing this morning but these two modules just will not go in and stay in. I’m admitting defeat for this evening and hoping that tomorrow my brain decides it fancies letting some of this info in!

The weather here has been grim today. So cold, and has been raininggggg and windy all day; it’s obviously saving the sunshine up for after I finish my exams on FRIDAY!

Made the mistake of looking at Ticketmaster earlier; mistake! So many gigs I’d like to go to. I think the music scene is possibly the only thing that could convince me to live in London for a year or two. There are so many incredible upcoming artists playing small, start up shows that I’d like to see but can’t justify paying £20 train fare plus accommodation for the night to see them. :(. I wouldn’t mind living in London for a year, maybe 2, but I think at heart I’ll always be a country girl. I quite like the compromise of being in a small city like Norwich or Exeter where there’s countryside and seaside nearby and the city’s big enough to have stuff going on, but not so big that you don’t feel okay walking round at night on your own.

Anyway another early night/early start for me,

Until Tomorrow,

Another gig and meal!

Another lovely (albeit revision free again) day. Went and saw my Nanna and had a nice catch up with her, before going out to Cafe Rouge and eating my bodyweight in duck and dauphinoise, yummmmmm.

Went to another gig this evening. This time was quite different to the others I went to last week, and at a venue I’ve never been to before. It’s a tiny theatre in the city centre, (I mean really tiny). The artist we went to see was called Beverley Craven, who is a singer/songwriter/pianist with a very distinctive voice. She had a big hit a while back in 1990 with a song called “Promise Me”, so I was one of the younger ones amongst the audience, but it was really good. Though a lot of sad songs about ex-husbands!

Definitely something I wouldn’t have thought of going to or even known about if it wasn’t for Mum buying me a ticket for Easter! So that was nice.

Lots of odd/boring jobs to do tomorrow, yawn.

Until Tomorrow,

Ben Montague and Science Museum

Currently sat in the Science Museum in London writing this as not sure if I’ll get the chance to write later on. No internet connection here though so not sure what time this will actually be posted today (it’s 14:30 right now).

I’ll start where I left off yesterday. After dropping Mum back at Liverpool Street station late afternoon (after the posh cafe – decided in the end that beetroot juice is not my thing…), I took the tube and went to the Southbank Centre. Always forget how much I like it there and it had one winning edge over pretty much everywhere else – it was warm! Full of children admittedly, but warm. Then met Eli and went for a cheap and quick dinner at Spoons before going to the Ben Montague.

I love his album, but wasn’t sure what to expect as the gig was in a small ish pub. When we got there this place was tiny, with a tiny music room behind a curtain and a stage in the corner. But it was nice enough and intimate venues like that are often some of the best gigs. BM was wandering around chatting to people as the majority of the audience were friends of one of the three bands.

There were two support acts, both very small local/friends of Ben type thing. Nonetheless they were okay, the second act, Tenth Electric were particularly good, just two guys and a guitar (though apparently there’s normally more of them). I did enjoy both acts, but the whole thing felt a bit thrown together, and it definitely wasn’t helped by the really rude audience who were all talking at full volume, so much so that the first act (Farrah, or something like that?) asked everyone to shut up!

I’m pleased to say that Ben Montague was amazing. He really is so talented, and as a frontman he was far more likeable, funny and at ease on stage than the previous had been. Unfortunately the tour had been organised so that it followed the 17 day support act tour he’d just finished supporting Amy Macdonald, and being the first date, it wasn’t as well rehearsed as it maybe could have been. The sound guy at the venue was appalling, could not get anything right and insisted on cutting him off at 10pm, despite the fact he hadn’t played his biggest hit. The audience were one of the rudest I’ve had the misfortune to be in, and Ben Montague actually stopped a song at one point to ask people to be quiet, which was a shame because he was worth listening to! Before the crazily early 10pm cut off he managed to fit in half a song with his cousin who he had promised could perform, meaning his biggest hit went unplayed. As a raw talent and showman he cannot be faulted, and I definitely would not hesitate to see him again, but I think the organisation of the show might need a bit of work!

As I mentioned I’m sat writing this in the science museum and this is quite a lengthy post as my feet ache, so have plonked myself on a bench!! It’s very noisy and very busy! Not sure in hindsight visiting during half term was my best idea. Museums seem to bring out the best and worst of parents. You see some parents who cannot encourage their child enough, have the patience of a saint, answer every single why question and let the child dictate the pace. But there’s nothing sadder than seeing a child want to ask a question or look at an exhibition only to be tugged away and told to hurry up or worse, shut up (nope I couldn’t believe it either!) by a disinterested parent just after a free day out.

Seeing Deaf Havana Unplugged tonight, which should be good. Sold out, think it’s a 900 capacity venue. Looking forward to that!

Until Tomorrow,

3000

I’ve reached over 3000 views on my blog, which I think is quite an achievement since I wasn’t really expecting anyone to read this! So thank you!

Been out for a lovely meal with Dad this evening, always nice to see him and hear about his week.

Looking forward to going to London for a few days tomorrow. Spending the day with Mum there tomorrow probably having a wander round Camden markets, then staying with Eli and seeing Ben Montague tomorrow night, then Deaf Havana’s Unplugged Tour Thursday. Be my first test of blogging away! Be nice to go to London. I’m such a tourist when I’m there, I haven’t got quite got the hang of city etiquette yet!

Until Tomorrow,

My Round-Up of March

So here’s everything I’ve done this month (well technically last month now) to help towards my aim of making 2013 my best year yet – in no particular order:

  • Got a 68 and 73 on my first pieces back of being a student since my head injury which I’m really pleased with, especially as they’re the topics I find the hardest.
  • Decided to go to Reading Festival. Last Summer I didn’t go to any festivals and I completely regretted it. I love the atmosphere at festivals and nothing really compares. Plus I love camping, so it’s a win win.
  • Booked lots of gigs. One of my favourite things to do aside from cooking and watching films, is to go to gigs. I used to go to no end when I was at high school and college, but since I’ve gone to uni (what with Exeter’s less than lively music scene and money being tight) it’s taken a bit of a back seat. I realised how much I miss going to gigs. So this week I’m going to see Deaf Havana and Ben Montague in London, next week I’m going to see a relatively unheard of artist who’s quite a different style of gig, then I obviously have Reading Festival and I have tickets booked for Nickelback (6th timeeeee) for November. I’m sure I’ll add more as they get announced. Nothing beats live music.
  • I did a big presentation in front of the best part of 120 people. It’s not a big deal as most of our class did, and I was in a group of three. But presentations have always panicked me and more often than not in the past I’ve managed to get out of them. But I didn’t event try this time, I just did it. It wasn’t very good, but I did it.
  • I’ve cleared out lots of junk. So far I’ve thrown out 7 bags of stuff from my room. Mum redecorating and me ordering all my new things has given me the motivation to have a much overdue clear out. Feels good to clear out hoarded bits and bobs. Feels a lot more calm and organised!
  • Met some great people. Having been on my course now for a couple of months, I’ve met some really great people and have been out with them all. Looking forward to meeting some more and getting to know other course-mates better in September!
  • I’ve made the time to watch a lot of films and read books. Both things I enjoy doing, but more often than not they get delayed because I have other things I should be doing. But this month I’ve organised my time a lot better with my workload so I have had time to do these.
  • I’ve kept this up for 3 whole months. A quarter of a year and I’ve found something to blog about every single day. Must admit when I took this on, I didn’t realise quite what a commitment I was making, but in a way I enjoy it and certainly helps me to focus on doing things that are worth writing about!

I’m sure there are lots of smaller little things I could put on here, but these are the main ones I think that have contributed to my aims of making 2013 the best it can be! Nothing major but all small steps in the right direction.

Until Tomorrow,

M x
